Collection of Chess Games in the Old C 20th
antique chess set collection
XXI century.
With the Internet now ubiquitous there are opportunities for collectors of all kinds, for example,
E-bay, (a double-edged sword).
Auctions online gambling (unless you can see in person)
Online retailers, (good, but can be expensive).
Chess collectors have many choices each time you see an ancient chess game. are, without any particular order.
Is it desirable?
Do you love me?
Will fit into my collection?
Is it in good condition?
If you can not be fixed and how?
"I can afford that?
There are many different styles of play available, and many different types of collectors.
some have a thematic collection, for example, India sets, sets of English, and so on, some collect sets wood only, some only ivory, some collect everything they can find.
So, leaving aside the personal needs of the collector Single, I explore what kind of a group can reasonably expect to find, where and
the frequency with which we could obtain the opportunity to buy this set and how, assuming that the whole is in good condition.
Also, most importantly, are the most established allowed for 'bragging rights with other collectors. This is an important consideration, no one wants to spend a lot of money for combinations of several years, and then find that everyone else has better, bigger or bought the same thing cheaper, etc.
Lets start with a decent standard set Staunton, this should be by Jaques, if you have any aspiration to be taken seriously as a collector. However, a collection of sets is not as valid Jaques, ver. http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/chesspurr
A joint statement signed in boxwood and ebony with 3 1 / 2 "Kings, weighted in the original box with label can be considered the minimum requirement, and will cost around 800 pounds from 2008.
Beg, borrow or buy a copy of the monograph Professor Alan Fersht on Jaques sets, so you can see if what is being offered is all right in the box to the right, etc.

Buy from a reputable dealer and get a receipt stating exactly what you have bought, whether it be a marriage, you can take it back for a refund or exchange.
If you buy off e-bay, or a market stall in any city, be prepared for disappointment, with no possibility of compensation.
however, it is possible that the changes proposed e-bay feedback system that e-bay purchase can, (and I say 'may') become less problematic.
Above is an example of an excellent principle, the range of Jaques Ivory 4 1 / 4 "king post in a rosewood box, a perfect early example, expect to pay £ 20,000 +. (If you ever see one)
If you are a potential "real" collection you already be drooling. If the game of chess on leaves you cold, stop reading immediately and go to collect garden gnomes, or razors or something, put one in the garden and with the other.
The picture above shows a reasonably good set Barleycorn, however, the size of Knights leaves something to be desired, however, these gentlemen are "correct" for this set.
Another joint with poor knights are Selenus and toy co. Germany sets, however, as this is the way it did there is nothing to do about it.
There are only a good guide general for antique chess sets are readily available, and that's masterpieces. Gareth Williams. Contains information on most of the games of chess you can expect to find and quite a few did not, and the things he says Gareth are accurate as to dates and responsible, etc.
Other previous books are difficult to find, or written in a "foreign" language (Welten und Zeiten Shakpartie Durch, 'The Hamburg chess club catalog ") or hopelessly vague, (Keats, World Chess), or simply hopeless, (Mackett-Beeson, chess sets).
The best place to see on a weekly series, is the market Portobello Road in London on Saturday morning.
Otherwise put on auction search online catalogs.
There are occasional sales devoted to chess, where collectors are known in the flesh, by the time they are received by Mr. Lucas honey auctioneers Bonhams.
Various online chess players and collectors, and enter "old chess game" in a search engine captures most of them.
Mr. Jon Crumiller (Jon chess sets ") is among those for various reasons, is a collector, not a trader, and your entire collection is online and updated Periodically, their descriptions are as accurate as I can.
http://www.crumiller.com/chess/chess_pages/jonchess.htm
Dealers are captured as above a valuable resource, but remember, the descriptions tend to be optimistic, as prices and discounts are often negotiable.
If you would like to start a chess game collection without breaking the bank, a good representative collection can be initiated by a couple thousand pounds, which can be spread in the purchases made for two or three years so it's not out of reach of most people.
Above is a fairly standard Old English bone together, should cost from £ 100 depending on size, anything under a king of three inches must be considered too small.
What should I buy first?
Looking first to buy reasonably good examples of joint readily available, it is, (again no particular order, and apart from the aforementioned model Staunton), skeletal system Barleycorn, Old English bone San Jorge pattern, ivory Burmese Cantonese puzzle ball, and ivory from India.
A word about the collection of old ivory objects is probably appropriate here.
own collection and objet d'art of ancient ivory is not yet nor is it illegal to sell or transport, although this is becoming in severely restricted, especially in the United States.
In fact the movement of ivory within and outside Europe and America is banned, there are certificates CITES, which theoretically can be issued to allow this, but until someone tells the idiots who work at airports and borders is irrelevant.
Lovers of trees responsible for this state of affairs will not stop until we are all prevented, smoking, drinking, driving and living, live in a perfect green paradise, but all have died of boredom. You have been warned.
You will find some places the dealers, who claim that George Washington placed in them, this is because GW ownership of this joint
Any set that is substantially different from the present should not be as described, and indicates the dealer in question is 'fluff' their sets and caution should be exercised before quoting anything said on the same site as fact.
But games like these that contrast with brick tower in the ballot box and stems, were made in the 18c, but also through the 19c and guess which is which not easy.
The San Jorge pattern established previously sold at auction, estimated £ 120 - 160 pounds and 55 pounds achieved only on the day and therefore has been characterized not sold, but there is more than possible replacements or other faults were not observed in the catalog.
That is of course only one reason why you should always view and handle lots are planning to bid on.
This beautiful set of ivory Hastilow would cost about £ 2,000 at auction (£ 1700 was the hammer price and commission of between 15% -30% should be added according that the auction house you're bidding on)
nobody is really sure if this style really set Hastilow, but once the name has appeared in print the label tends to stick. (There are serious researchers who are working on these problems and scholarship and moves on knowledge.)
As a very general guide, which are rarely offered an array 18c, 19c ensembles are actually early 20c. so the year on the purchase of some caution, But retailers and Internet vendors are all covered by the same sale of goods act that all retailers are, so be sure to get a receipt indicating exactly what you have purchased. If it later turns out to be materially different from those described, you can reasonably claim against them (although this is not easy).
Canton Chinese joint.
hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of these sets were imported into the UK in 19c. and because the Victorians kept them under glass domes, (mostly) a large number have survived, so if you like this sort of thing, (not me)
No purchase necessary first offered, like another one better in a minute.
Apart from a batch of 21 sets up are reasonably common examples, buy if you like, but never buy a game with missing pieces, as you will never find any matching pieces, as these systems were done to adapt to the materials and sizes on hand at the time of decision, and always a little different from this system to set.
Try to buy sets Chinese laborers well made, carved in the round, not hacked because most were 20C.
The best way to start collecting chess sets, is surf the net, starting with my site Picasa
http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/chessspy
then move on my site Scribd.

As I said earlier, if you write "ancient chess set" in the form of election, it will return a sufficient number of relevant sites to keep you entertained for weeks or even months, just do not believe everything you read.
As with any vocation, there are roads and paths. there are for example those who only collect signatures famous chess players, and those who are primarily interested in travel sets, etc.
My personal interest is chess pieces, but for anyone with a computer (or access to one) there are collectors sufficient and online retailers to suit all tastes. Have fun.
Alan Dewey. 2008.
